Local Solutions: Access to Healthcare

Summary

Committment to Affordable and Accessible Healthcare

Our nation continues to face a healthcare insurance crisis with still millons of uninsured and even more underinsured people.  Insurance costs and drug costs continue to rise at alarming rates.  I can't fix these national problems but, with your support, I can make this promise:

"No matter what happens with healthcare in our country, I promise to adapt and work to keep Washington Hospital open and available to everyone in our community.  I will work diligently to help make healthcare more affordable in our community."

Today's Projects - Tomorrow's Solutions

Summary

Building for our Present and Future Healthcare Needs

Meeting the current and future healthcare needs of our community requires a thorough understanding of both where healthcare is going and how our community is changing.   With 25 years of experience as a physician serving our community and 18 years as a director on the Washington Hospital Board, I have the perspective and experience to make the important decisions on what new facilities and programs are needed to serve the healthcare needs of our community.  Currently, we are building our new Emergency Room and Critical Care (ICU and CCU) facilities which will enable Washington Hospital to become a Trauma Center.   Over my years of service on the board we have developed many new facilities and programs.    With an eye on careful management of the district's financial resources, these facilities have been built on-budget and on-time.  With your vote on November 8, I can continue the careful planning and development to meet the healthcare needs of our community now and in the future.

Striving for Excellence

Summary

Continuing our Focus on Quality

In an effort to reduce human error and increase safety and quality, Washington Hospital now has hospitalists, intensivists, rapid response teams, and a medication safety officer.  We have leveraged the electronic medical record to help nurses and doctors deliver the best care possible.   With this focus on quality, Washington Hospital has become the major medical center in Southern Alameda County.

This success has been characterized by continued growth, new services, financial stability, and solid steady leadership. Washington Hospital continues to be rated among the top hospitals in the Bay Area and we have maintained our coveted Magnet Status in recognition of nursing excellence. Again and again, Healthgrades has rated Washington Hospital in the Top 5% of Hospitals in America for clinical excellence and in the Top 100 in America for joint replacement. Beginning in 2013, our affiliation with UCSF has continued to grow giving the highest level of specialty care locally to your loved ones, both children and adults.
