Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • To make sure that the city funds programs that enhance public education from preK to college.
  • When the citizens have access to high quality public education from preK to college, the citizens will prosper. They will create jobs and other opportunities. Funding for affordable housing so children and families feel safe.
  • Funding for seniors is crucial because it's population will from 15% to 30% in 15 years. Many of them have limited funds.

Magdalena De Guzman came to America when she was 14 years old. She became a naturalized American citizen, graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in Business and Management and Voice Pedagogy. She left Chicago for San Francisco at age 24 and never left the city. She worked for a newspaper agency in the classified advertising until she was offered a scholarship to take a bilingual teaching credential and master in multicultural education at the University of San Francisco. She is a bilingual school teacher for the last 23 years in San Francisco, an elected union official for 7 years, twice elected delegate to the teachers' state convention, and once elected delegate to the national education's convention. Last year, she received a Fulbright through the University of California's Southeast Asian Studies to immerse herself in the Philippine Studies at the University of the Philippines during the summer.

She decided to run for District 11 Supervisor because she understands the socio-economic and socio-political pulse of the city. What other way to immerse oneself than to be with the students all day whose parents are struggling with affordable housing,  non-living wages, multiple jobs to make ends meet. With that comes domestic violence, and   child abuse due to economic stress felt by families. Magdalena sees the fabric of the city being shred into pieces due to drastic changes in the economic landscape of the city where tax breaks are given to multi million dollar companies, thousands of highly skilled workers moved into the city and   skyscraping, expensive, multi-storied condominiums are built  to accommodate the new residents.  The developer are building so fast and are causing havoc in the psyche of ordinary residents. Are they going to turn San Francisco into all gleaming condominiums from the San Francisco Bay to the great high way?  Many residents are probably asking this question.  Magdalena is running         to de-stress the psyche of the city residents and District 11 in particular.  She wants to address  and bring to the forefront the big issue - social, political, and economic equity for all. "Can we have a critical mass from all stakeholders to create a city that genuinely addresses EQUITY for all?" She challenges everyone. Her answer, "YES, WE CAN."

Magdalena De Guzman, a school teacher, is running for District 11 Supervisor. As an inner city school teacher in San Francisco, she's immersed in socio-economic and socio-political problems that the children and their families are faced with - from homelessness to lack of affordable housing, to parents struggling with multiple jobs due to  sub-living wages, to unemployment or underemployment, to child abuse, and domestic violence and racism. There are reasons when children act the way they act.  They are asking for help or guidance. The conditions surrounding them are manifested in the way they feel, think, and act. 

Magdalena's decision to run is because her experiences as a school teacher make her see clearly that fundamentally, the  system is harming the children, families and the rest.  As a supervisor, she can influence policies that can transform the city and county government into a more humane candidate compassionate one ready to serve all stakeholdres  that want San Francisco to thrive, not just for the few, but for the inclusion of the 99%
