Former Congressman Jerry Patterson, now a College Trustee at Coast Community Colleges has been a lifelong public policy advocate for a strong middle class and for sustaining our environment.   Patterson received a bachelor’s degree from California State University in Political Science and Public Administration, and a Juris Doctor degree from UCLA Law  School.

As a lawyer he concentrated in public law and land use.  In private practice he served as the contract City Attorney for a number of cities.  Congressman Patterson has been a public official for a total of 49 years--  35 years in elected and 14 years in appointed positions.

As College Trustee of Coast Community Colleges (1996-present), Trustee Patterson is an ardent supporter of public schools and education.  He strongly believes in the mission of community colleges and owes his own success in higher education and life generally  to attending two years of community college courses.

Student success is our life at the community colleges.  Every student has a personal educational plan that may include transfer to a four year school, preparation for new or changing jobs in the workplace, or gaining the skills necessary to a successful life.

Finally, Jerry believes and supports a sustainable environment through all our community college actions.  We have increased our environmental compliance with State laws, have sustainable buildings (LEEDS), have a successful Recycling Center for community use, have photovoltaic generation of electricity to reduce our footprint on this precious planet.

Filosofía política

Education is the key to a better life.  Education means not only preparation for a better job.  It means our lifetime should involve learning new things, ideas, how things work, history repeating itself, global interaction of diversity and tolerance.  The happiness that wider education brings will create more positive and forward solutions to life's ills.  The "hinge years" for successful use and development are the years of transition from child to adult, from dependence to responsibility and independence.
