Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Our neighborhood schools need the most support in our school system. In order to support our schools, we need to engage parents. Our families are challenged socio-economically so our schools must do more to engage PARENTS at every level.
  • We must prepare students for today’s workforce - develop vocational and technology training for students. We must provide them practical help that allows them the opportunity to “hit the ground running” when they graduate.
  • We need additional after-school and weekend tutorial sessions to bolster students who may need additional assistance or those that want to get ahead. Summer school for students with failing grades or limited English skills.

Biografía

I come from a close-knit family of 12 siblings that were all born in Indiana. My family moved out to California when I was young. Both my parents worked to make ends meet for our large family and many times worked two jobs. My mother worked full-time, at night, as a nurse and did not drive. I started work at an early age. I worked as a laborer, along with my twin brother, in the strawberry fields of Salinas, California. When our family later relocated to Orange County, I worked in the hotels near Disneyland in various capacities. I know the value of hard work and paid for my own education.

I have proudly raised four children. All are graduates of the public school system. My oldest son, 31, is married and a cinematographer in Brooklyn, NY. Another son, 29, is a graduate of USC, where is also a professor. My daughter, 19, attends the Univ. of AZ, as a pre-med student. Finally, my youngest son, 18, just graduated high school and will attend a junior college this fall.

Educational and Work Background

After graduating high school in Garden Grove, I attended CSULB and graduated with honors. While at CSULB I was active in politics and advocated for the adoption of CALPIRG. I graduated from Loyola Law School, with a J.D. I have worked ever since and have been an as an AV-rated attorney, since 2000, and have been a past recipient of the Wiley W. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Service.

Civic and Social Organizations Participation

My civic work has been focused primarily on the assistance of youth. I have had a long history of assisting community-based groups with my children (coach, Cub Scouts, etc.), and with my church, (Knights of Columbus, etc.), but for the broader community the following is an outline of service participation:

·         Neighbors for Santiago Creek Trail (Founding Member) - a grass-roots group advocating for more open   space and a trail access in Santiago Creek for Santa Ana residents.

·         Santa Ana Active Streets (“SAAS”) (Founding Member) - a community-based coalition with the mission

of cultivating diverse community participation in safe active transportation.

·         Pythian Youth Foundation (Board Member) – charitable foundation that raises monies to send at-risk youth to our camp in the Sequoias/Sierras.) Santa Ana Groups assisted include (1) GRIP (Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership); (2) SAPAAL (Santa Ana Policy Athletic & Activity League); (3) Santa Ana Boys and Girls Club, and others.

·         Knight of Pythias (Lodge#85) (Member) - non-sectarian fraternal order focused on benevolent works.

·         Santiago Creek Greenway Alliance (Board Member) – nonprofit that clean up and raise monies to open access to Santiago Creek including building trails.
