Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • As a nurse it is important for me to advocate for access to quality and affordable healthcare. Healthcare is a human right. I support a Single Payer Healthcare system.
  • Addressing the destruction of our environment is urgent. I support a Green New Deal. We need to transition to a just economy with jobs that don't increase harm to the environment.
  • As an active union leader and Commissioner on the Berkeley Commission of Labor I support improving working conditions and wages for all workers. I support union organizing in many fields that haven't been previously represented .

Biografía

I graduated from San Francisco State with a Bachelor in the Science of Nursing in 1986. I have been a Registered Nurse at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland for 33 years. I have primarily cared for children and some adults with cancer and blood disorders. I have been a member and leader in my union, the California Nurses Association for my entire career. I am a delegate to the Alameda Central Labor Council. I have served on the Berkeley Commission on Labor since 2015. I have been past Chair and Vice Chair of the Commission. Under my tenure we successfully raised the minimum wage in Berkeley for all workers.

I have been active in the California Democratic Party as an elected Assembly Delegate since 2008 and as the Eboard Leader for Assembly District 15 since 2015. I have been an alternate to the Alameda County Central Committee for the last 3 years. I have worked on many policital campaigns, including Tony Thurmond's Assembly and State Superintendent of Schools races. I have traveled out of state every four years to canvas for the Presidential nominee since 2004. I have also worked on numerous state proposition campaigns as well state and local races.  I am a long time member of the Wellstone Democratic Club and served some time on their Coordinating Committee as membership chair.

I raised 3 children as a single parent and now have 4 grandchildren. I have been a resident of Berkeley since 1982.

Filosofía política

I have been an activist all my life. My parents raised me to believe that committment to your community was of utmost importance. I believe that in order to show that committment you must take action. In my workplace as an active union leader, a shop steward and the Chair of a Nursing Practice Committee I help empower other nurses. It is important to use one's voice to advocate for those that cannot advocate for themselves. I recently organized a rally at my hospital for a patient that was threatened with deportation. I helped pass legislation in Sacramento with a group called Vacinate California which requires vaccines for school attendance. I worked for several years on legislation to support funding for patients in California with Sickle Cell Anemia.

So my philosphy for politics is that all politics in based on building relationships with those in your community who want to lead on issues. Those leaders can be elected or community members with common goals. We have to work with those we don't always agree with to get things done. I have worked on campaigns for leaders that have lost and have gone on to build a relationship with the then winning candidate. I am a pragmatic person and understand that if I want to pursue certain aims I must keep my eye on those and not burn any bridges. I feel it is crucial to be ethical and behave in ways that honor my family and community.
