Biografía

Sylvia, our three children and I have lived in Mill Valley for 20 years. We are at home here in this community of unique beauty, history, and nature.

I ran for Mill Valley City Council in 2015 because, like you, we  have much at stake in this community.  I was concerned, and I felt it was important to run for council to serve and represent our community's best interests. That passion, and concern, drove me to run again.

How did we end up in Mill Valley?

My parents were born and raised in small towns in Indiana. After serving in Europe during WWII, my father married his high school sweetheart and they decided to move to Texas where my father earned his degree in finance on the GI Bill.

Hired to work for an oil company it wasn't long before they moved to Venezuela. I was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela and we moved to Jakarta, Indonesia when I was 14 years old.  I attended the Jakarta International School and then left for college in Texas - my first year living in the United States. For many years English was my second language. Graduating with a BA in Business, I went on to earn my MBA in Arizona where Sylvia and I met.

My professional background and work experience includes managing global teams, strategic planning, budget development and analysis. I've worked as an international executive in education management with Berlitz International for 22 years living in NYC, Austin, Washington D.C., Hong Kong, Singapore, San Francisco and Princeton.

In my final years with Berlitz International - a Japanese subsidiary of Benesse Corporation - I held C-level roles responsible for revenues of $50M+, leading R&D, high-growth new business segments, and corporate partnerships.

Today, I provide consulting services (pro-bono) leading marketing, analysis and strategic planning projects for select non-profits serving under-represented minorities, usually related to education.

We moved from Singapore to Mill Valley in 1999 because it had affordable housing and excellent schools. Two of our three children were born in Hong Kong and our third child, now 20, was born in Marin.  All three went to Mill Valley's public schools.

Why the personal details? Ability, skills, knowledge, awareness, mindfulness are shaped by experience.

While I am very aware of my small-town midwestern roots and heritage, I have lived and worked in places where governance was not necessarily "of the people" or "for the people".  Understanding and appreciating this fundamental right and privilege is a core value and manifested through my positions and actions on  issues.

Because of who I am, where I come from, and what I've learned, I demand transparency in city governance and I will legislate listening to the community to arrive at informed and balanced decisions. Any subjugation of these rights and responsibilities is not acceptable.

As your representative I will dig into details and continue a legacy attuned to responsible governance in Mill Valley. Governance aligned with Mill Valley's natural environment and progressiveness. This is, above all else, my first priority.

Environmental preservation, fiscal prudence, and emergency preparedness are all quality of life and safety issues. All will weigh heavily on every decision I make as your council member.

I have a strong understanding of our city’s operations, issues and opportunities having served on City committees, the Parks & Recreation Commission (two terms), and having run for City Council in 2015. Closely following departmental, committee, commission and council decisions over the past three years I am ready to jump right in.  Compared to my council run in 2015 - no longer in the "belly of the beast" - I have a broader, better understanding of what it takes to lead and represent my community as one of five voting council members.

I ask for your vote and the opportunity to represent you as I continue to serve Mill Valley with experience, integrity and common sense.

WHERE DOES KIRK STAND ON THE ISSUES

Summary

AFFORDABILITY AND A OUR STRONG RECORD OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND LEADERSHIP.

Please visit  Kirk Knauer For Mill Valley on facebook.

I ran for Mill Valley City Council in 2015 because there were issues that impacted affordability and did not necessarily reflect our strong record of environmental stewardship and leadership.

I decided I must run to serve and represent our community’s interests and concerns. That passion is driving my run this time too.

While Mill Valley considers itself a progressive community, the principled ideals and goals of progressives must be advocated and fought for at city hall.

Environmental preservation, fiscal prudence, and emergency preparedness are all quality of life and safety issues. All will weigh heavily on every decision I make as your council member.

Closely following and participating in departmental, committee, commission and council decisions over the past three years I am ready to jump right in.  Today, I have a broader, better understanding of what it takes to lead and represent you  as one of five voting council members.

I ask for your vote and the opportunity to continue to serve Mill Valley with experience, integrity and common sense.
